Electronic Links Introduces New Gigabit Polymer Connectors

Binghamton, NY – In supporting Gigabit data transfer over polymer fiber, ELII is introducing two board mount connectors. Both are capable of delivering 1.25 Gbps signal over POF.

The Tx and Rx are red RCLED (Resonant Cavity Light Emitting Diode). These two connectors are:

  • • Gigabit SMI form factor
  • • Gigabit IDB form factor

Both connectors have the same features with the exception in the latching mechanism. The Gigabit SMI has a friction latch where the IDB has a snap type latching for a more positive retention.

Key Features:

  • • Visible light source
  • • -20 to + 70 C
  • • Single 3.3 V power supply
  • • Eye safe

Applications:

  • • Printers
  • • Medical equipment
  • • Machine vision systems
  • • Gigabit Ethernet LAN

These connectors mate with the respective cable assemblies, also provided by ELII, in a distance of 30 m with Graded Index (GI) POF.

New line of Plastic Optical (POF) Fiber and Cables from LEONI Fiber Optics

Selection of protective buffers, outer jackets and colors, fiber optic core sizes, numerical apertures and end terminations to fit application and customers’ needs.

Williamsburg, VA (April 14, 2011) – Allowing the use of plastic optical fiber cost-effectively in a wide variety of applications, LEONI Fiber Optics introduces its new standard line of plastic optic fiber cables. The LEONI POF has proven effective in a number of medical, scientific and industrial applications ranging from illumination in a 25 gauge probe for vitreo-retinal surgery, to factory automation and industrial control (Profibus, ProfiNet, Industrial Ethernet, SERCOS) and control systems for wind and solar power systems.

Polymer optical fibers (POF) have been on the market for many years. Both the fiber core and the cladding are made of polymer. Key advantages of polymer optical fibers are high flexibility (high alternate bending resistance with smaller bending radii) as well as more economical connecting and transmission technology than in the case of glass.

Moreover, this type of fiber also has all the major benefits of a fiber optical cable connection:

  • • EMC security,
  • • Clear galvanic separation,
  • • No crosstalk,
  • • Low weight

POF can by now be used to bridge distances up to 70 meters, which is normally sufficient for industrial environments and smaller office as well as home networks. It is even possible to cover distances up to 150 meters by selecting suitable active components. POF cables are available for indoors and outdoors. A wide range of constructions are available depending on the requirement.

  • • Special requirements in terms of flexibility
  • • Resistance to oil,
  • • Resistance to UV,
  • • Freedom from halogen or
  • • Flame retardan

New Plugless Device Connects POF to Standard Wall Plates

logoTo facilitate the connection of polymer fibers via a plugless device that provides a very low db loss, ELII is introducing a device that plugs into wall plates already available in the market. The device connects polymer cables via a push-in mechanism that secures the cables in place, providing the end user with an easy way to connect a variety of POF products. The plugless device accepts cable with a diameter of 2.2mm.

The standard color is black, but other colors are available. The order number for the black device is ELII-2.20-L-B.

Rugged Polymer Cable Assembly for Heavy Vehicles

logoBased on the SMA connector system with additional rugged parts, ELII is introducing a 40-meter cable assembly using 1mm POF. Additional lengths are available on request. The polymer assemblies are used in excavators, cranes, forklifts, and the like. The 40-meter configuration has a maximum attenuation of approximately 180dB.

European Research Consortium to Unveil Breakthrough of Gigabit Transmissions over POF at OFC 2011

logo POF-PLUS, an EU sponsored research consortium backed by some of Europe’s largest telecom operators, including France Telecom and Telecom Italia, will present at OFC 2011 results of its research into and development of new commercially viable technologies for transmission at Gigabit speeds over Plastic Optical Fiber (POF).

This new technology will be highlighted on two booths, and in a talk at the POF Symposium. On the POF-PLUS booth, # 2830, consortium members Firecomms, Luceat, and Rosetta IP will provide live demonstrations of Gigabit Ethernet transmissions utilizing media converters. Member organizations Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits and POF Application Center (POFAC) will showcase novel developments of this new Gigabit transmission technology on the Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO) booth, #2615. The developments of parallel optical transceivers for transmission of multi-gigabit transmission speeds also will be featured on the POFTO booth.

Attendees interested in a full overview of the results of the Gigibit transmission project will be rewarded by a talk given by Professor Roberto Gaudino of the Politecnico di Torino. Hugh Hennessy, Firecomms VP of sales and marketing, will conclude the presentation with a discussion of the roadmap to commercial deployment of Gigabit technology. The presentation will be held at the POF Symposium in Expo Theater 3 on the exhibition floor at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 10.

“For several years major operators across Europe have deployed POF in home networks because of the simplicity and ultra-thin nature of POF,” says John Lambkin, CTO of Firecomms. “With these presentations,

POF-PLUS is demonstrating how POF home networks, with guaranteed reliability and the lowest maintenance costs, are future-proofed for the next twenty years or more.”

The OFC 2011 Exposition will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California on March 8-10, 2011.
